Nashville names line up for 25th Celtic Connections

The world’s biggest Winter arts festival is celebrating it’s 25th Anniversary in 2018, and, as ever Glasgow’s Celtic Connections is offering an array of Americana and Country names within the 17 day line up.
Amongst the highlights are the return of The Mavericks (Feb 4th Royal Concert Hall) and sisters Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer (Jan 27th), in support of their haunting new album, “Not Dark Yet”, which we reviewed in the last CMDS. Dale Watson, who is the leader of the acclaimed Ameripolitan traditional music movement, is coming back to Scotland with his Lonestars band Jan 29th Royal Concert Hall)
Shawn Colvin (Jan 21st Royal Concert Hall) is celebrating her own anniversary. The recipient of the 2016 AMA Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award, having blurred the lines between folk, country and pop for the past 20 years.
Hayseed Dixie, a group known for sending up popular songs in a bluegrass style are back in town (Feb 1st, ABC), but if your bluegrass tastes are more traditional, you can catch the wonderful Sierra Hull (Jan 26th Mitchel Theatre). The Tennessee native released her first album on the renowned Rounder Records when she was just 16 years old. She won the Mandolin player Award for the second year at the recent IBMA Awards, as well as the Recorded Event Award for a duet with Bobby Osborne.
In a similar vein are Underhill Rose, who are sharing the bill with Louisiana’s The Deslondes (Jan 24th, Oran Mor) and The Railsplitters (Jan 30th Strathclyde Suite).
South Dakota born, but Bakersfield influenced Sam Outlaw has made several visits to Scotland in the past year. He returns to Oran Mor (Feb 3rd), the same night as Saskatoon troubadour Colter Wall plays The Tron Theatre.
Elsewhere, the stunning Yola Carter is in town with her soulful Country spirit (Jan 25th, ABC). Yola was last in Scotland, for Paisley’s The Spree in October. Josh Kelley plays King Tuts Feb 5th, Hayes Carll teams up with Canada’s Corb Lund (Jan 26th St Lukes) and Teddy Thompson teams up with Georgian songwriter Lera Lynn (Jan 25th Mackintosh Church).
But it’s not all touring acts coming in for Celtic Connections. “Northstar- Scotland Sings Canada”, the production which was one of the highlights of last year’s Southern Fried Festival, finds a place at Celtic Connections. One of its’ stars is Dean Owens, who also performs his own show, with his Whiskey Hearts at The Drygate Brewery Feb 2nd. The highly acclaimed youngster Katie Kross is part of a Songwriting Circle held at Broadcast on Jan 28th.
One of the regular Celtic Connections highlights is “Transatlantic Sessions”, hosted by Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas. It’s the stage show, which developed out of the old TV series, and is held over two nights, Friday 2nd & Sunday 4th February, at the Royal Concert Hall.  This year’s line up includes Suzy Bogguss, who released her American Folk Songs collection, before her current Merle Haggard tribute, The Secret Sisters and Shawn Camp.
Celtic Connections runs January 18th- February 4th at venues across Glasgow. Check out all the events at www.celticconnections.com , and tune in to Celtic Music Radio, 95FM & www.celticmusicradio.net, for unrivalled daily coverage live from the festival.
